The shock of seeing the first grey hair, when totally unexpected, in the late twenties or early thirties, can be huge. But don’t worry, there are several simple home remedies you can try to halt the greying in its tracks.

Further, in the process, you can avail the added benefit of overall healthy scalp and hair these natural ingredients bestow on us.

Remedies to prevent premature greying

Indian gooseberry

Indian gooseberry, commonly known as amla, is a lifesaver when it comes to dealing with greying. You can utilise it in several ways to serve the purpose. Either consume it as juice or topically use it as a hair mask or hair oil as explained below:

Amla juice:

You can prepare fresh amla juice by blending 1 or 2 deseeded amla fruit with a cup of water and drink it daily. The fruit has incredible amounts of vitamins and minerals, nourishes the hair from within, and stops premature greying.

Amla hair mask:

Cut a handful of fruits into small pieces. Grind it along with some water to make a fine paste. Apply this paste as a mask. Make sure you massage it well onto the scalp so that the juice nourishes the roots well. Let it sit at least for 10 minutes and wash it off with water.

Amla hair oil:

You can also opt for the amla hair oil to stop premature greying. You can buy readymade ones available in stores or prepare the oil yourself at home.

  • Heat coconut oil in a pan, add amla powder to it and allow it to stay on low heat for a few minutes.
  • You can also add other ingredients good for hair, such as fenugreek or curry leaves.
  • Remove from the heat, and allow to cool. Strain it and store it in a container for later use.

Use this oil to massage your scalp and wash it off with a mild shampoo. You will see a noticeable difference.

  2. Strain and extract the juice. You can also add lemon to it (optional).
  3. Apply the juice on your scalp and allow it to rest for half an hour before rinsing it off with shampoo.

Also, regular intake of wheatgrass juice and carrot juice can help in this regard.

Kalonji seeds

Kalonji seeds are known to be helpful in not just preventing greying but possibly reversing it. You can use kalonji seed oil to reap the benefit. Warm the oil and massage it onto your scalp, let it rest for an hour and wash it with herbal shampoo.

You can also use castor oil, mustard oil or sesame oil that can effectively combat greying. Further, using such oils improves your hair’s condition.

You may also turn to Ayurveda for a solution and opt for oils such as Bringamalakadi Taila, Brahmi Bringaraj Taila, Sahadevi Hair Oil, Dasapushpam Oil upon consultation with a trained Ayurveda practitioner.

This simple culinary herb is an excellent remedy to stop premature greying. Boil rosemary leaves in water; let the solution cool down. Optionally, you can also use sage leaves along with rosemary leaves to enhance the efficacy. Apply the solution on your hair, allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes and then wash it off with a mild shampoo.

Another way to use rosemary for treating grey hair is to soak the herb in a jar filled with olive oil, leave it in the sun for a couple of weeks, and then use the same as your regular hair massage oil.

Black tea

Black tea is another excellent option to retain the natural hair colour. This remedy works on existing grey hair and prevents premature greying as well. You can brew the tea and use it as a rinse, either by itself or after your shampoo routine. Tea rinses are suitable for black hair. For brown hair, opt for a coffee rinse instead.

ProTip: Would you like to colour your hair naturally? Using a henna hair pack is sure to give you exciting results. Use organic henna powder. Henna is a natural conditioner and gives a bright orangish colour. To reduce the orange tint, use tea rinse or coffee rinse.

Herbal hair wash powder

Herbal hair wash powders are another excellent way to stop premature greying and make your hair healthy. Such powders are available from several brands, which essentially combine many of the ingredients above along with Shikakai, a base ingredient used for cleaning hair.

In fact, when used as a replacement for shampoo and conditioner, herbal hair wash powders can help you combat all of your hair care woes once and for all.

Here is one such brand to serve as a sample:

The ingredients are all-natural with no additives whatsoever. You can explore and choose the brand that suits you best.

However, it is to be noted that using such hair wash powders is not as easy as using shampoo. These powders do not lather. Hence, you will need to put in some effort to scrub it well and rinse thoroughly. It will get easier with use, though. And, you will have to repeat the process twice or thrice a week to observe marked improvement.

So, this is the takeaway

Natural remedies always have a charm and are likely to give results. So, go on and try any of the remedies mentioned in the post to stop premature greying of hair.

However, when it comes to home-based remedies, there is no “one shoe fits all” solution. Also, be it any option, give it time to check if it works for you before moving on to try another. Some remedy may not be for you and might even cause hair fall. Don’t fret, though. Such lost hair will usually grow back.
