The Indian remedy with moong dal for instant constipation relief

Typically enjoyed during festivals, moong dal payasam is made with moong dal, jaggery and coconut milk. While this is a sweet delicacy, it is also an excellent remedy for constipation due to the natural laxative effects in all three ingredients.

Ingredients:

  1. Split moong dal – 1 cup
  2. Jaggery – 3/4 cup
  3. Coconut milk – 1/2 cup

Why do these ingredients help relieve constipation?

Moong dal or mung dal:

Moong dal or Mung dal is used extensively in Ayurvedic diets for its health benefits. The lentils are high in both soluble and insoluble fibre, which is great for water absorption, adding bulk to the stool and thus helping pass stools. Also, it possesses laxative properties that help soften stools, making bowel movements easier and more comfortable.

Jaggery:

Preparing moong dal-jaggery payasam, a simple and effective remedy for instant constipation relief

Step 1: Preparing moong dal

Wash moong dal twice or thrice and add it to a pressure cooker. Add three cups of water and cook the lentils until soft (keep in high flame until one whistle, and then simmer for five minutes). Let it cool down.

Meanwhile, let us make jaggery and coconut milk ready.

Step 2: Preparing Coconut milk

Grate one cup of coconut and add it to the mixer. Grind it well with 1/2 cup of water. Filter the milk alone using a sieve. The coconut milk should not be runny. So, add the right amount of water while grinding.

Step 3: Preparing Jaggery syrup

It is recommended to filter the syrup before adding jaggery to the cooked moong dal as it may contain impurities. However, you can also find pure jaggery without impurities.

If you have impure jaggery, follow these steps:

  • Add grated or sliced jaggery to water and heat it on a low flame.
  • Keep stirring until the jaggery dissolves completely in water and the mixture starts bubbling.
  • Now, switch off the stove
  • Filter the syrup.

For pure jaggery, simply measure and add it directly to the cooked dal.

Step 4:

Place the bowl with cooked lentils on low flame. Slowly add the jaggery syrup, mixing it well with the cooked dal. Keep stirring for five minutes until both ingredients mix well. Now switch off the stove and add the coconut milk.
